Micrococcus & Kokuria Species
Micrococcus and Kocuria species are Gram positive cocci (spherical) bacteria belonging to the family Micrococcaceae, which also includes Staphylococcus bacteria.
Generally considered non-pathogenic, commensal bacteria, these organisms are normal flora of the skin, oral cavity, and mucous membranes of humans and animals.
Secondary sources include animal and dairy products. Micrococcus/Kocuria are the most commonly occurring aerobic bacteria in cleanroom environments. Their presence is related to personnel activity and problems with garbing.
It is difficult to differentiate Kocuria from Micrococcus with conventional biochemical methods; therefore, these organisms are often reported together as Micrococcus/Kocuria species.
Technologies such as matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry are capable of distinguishing several species of these genera.
